Tuesday: 10 May in Tywford UK: Day 2 our first full day in Britian. Jane and I crashed at 10PM Monday night and slept until 0800AM. Adjustment for the 5 hours had been made overnight!!
OK, lets backup Sunday Ian & Cathy drove us to the Orlando airport which was mobbed for a Sunday morning (Mothers Day) it took well over a half and hour to make it thru Security control. Our flight up to Boston was great but on an MD-88 the first class row 4 only has a soft curtain behind the seats to separate the "back of the bus" from the 1st class. Why mention the curtain (?) because there were two small boys in row 5 who were allowed to board the plane with 'ants in their pants.' They couldn't sit still and were a little rowdy; had there been a proper bulkhead behind us the separation of noise who have been better not to mention less kicking of our seatbacks. Their mother said along with them but had NO control of them.
In Boston we arrived early and found our way to the Sky Club to while away the 4.5 hours until the cross the pond flight. At 530 we boarded the flt to London we were impressed with the Business Elite section of full flat bed compartments. Unlimited wine, real silverware and pretty damn good food followed by dessert before stretching out flat for 2+ hours of sleep. We circled overhead London and ultimately landed on time versus 25 mins early. Outside of the customs hall we were surprised and met by David & Joyce Murray who had nothingbetter to do on Monday at 0600 but to come to Heathrow to welcome the Beskows to the UK. What a great surprise and real treat early in the morn!!!!!!
We got ourselves organized enjoyed a coffee and then headed off on the Hertz bus to get our car. We arrived at the Hertz lot and were told that the car wash machine had broken and that our automatic was not clearned nor was it ready. After 20+ minutes of waiting the Gold Hertz card chap finally offered to 'upgrade' me for merely 20£ extra a day to which I balked and complained that it was 0920 and our paid for/on line rental check in had started at 0800 over 1 and a half hours ago. Ultimately, the Mgr told the chap to just "comp" the Mercedes automatic coupe to us so we could get on our way to Twyford Reading. Carmen Garmin adjusted to the UK and led us directly to our destination and the drive along the left hand side of the road was taken without incident.
Monday evening Maureen cooked a lovely meal of different curries, chicken, shrimp, spinach dahl, rice etc.
On Tuesday Sandy drove and we all tagged along to Avebury and the standing stones. Amazing to think that there had been inhabitants there 6000 years ago! However the bigger question to me was ,Why the standing stones? Was it a landing place for aliens, a place of worship, or simply something to do in their spare time?!We did the walk about directly up to the stones, the various galleries, and the old church in the town grounds was closed for a furneral service, it seems that old Charlie a local farmer had died at 97. So he had dibs on the church that afternoon. We walked both the north 40 and south forty before taking in a hearty pub lunch. It was a lovely day, dry and sunny, a lot of American tourists around! We even watched a sheepdog round up some very silly sheep during his training session.
